The 2024 presidential candidate petition drive has begun. Please read the details of this page carefully.
Background
Our candidates have now been chosen. In Kentucky, we must collect a minimum of 5,000 valid signatures. Given the nature of the petition drive, this translates to approximately 8,000 “raw” signatures.
Collecting a Valid Signature
All signers must be registered voters in the state of Kentucky at the time they sign the petition. A valid signature is one that can be identified and all information is fully filled in by the signer.
The most effective way to screen someone is to ask them if they’re registered to vote in Kentucky. Then ask them if they would be willing to place another candidate on the ballot in Kentucky.
Each person must sign the petition for themselves; no one can sign for any other person including a spouse, child, etc. Any missing information will invalidate the signature. The signer must use blue or black ink.
- The Date column must contain the month, day, and year that they signed the petition. Make sure it’s the correct date.
- The Date Of Birth column must contain the month, day, and year the signer was born.
- The Signature column must contain the voter’s legal signature.
- If their signature is illegible, ask them to additionally print their last name clearly and very small in the signature box as well.
- The Residential Address column must contain the house number and street name where the voter is registered to vote.
- PO Boxes and other addresses are not allowed.
- The City & Zip column must contain the city and the zip code for the residential address. The state isn’t necessary (since it must be KY)
- Zip codes are the most-commonly missed item. To facilitate preventing missed zip codes, a slash has been added to facilitate making it clear that a city and a zip code must be included.
All information for a voter must be contained on a single petition line. Information spread across two rows will not count.
The petition must be presented as a petition to place a candidate on the ballot. We’re also against fraud, so don’t bend the truth on what someone is signing.
Here is an example of a valid signature line:
Turning in signatures
We ask that people initial the bottom right corner of their signature page, so that we know who sent in the petition. This will help us keep our straw poll tally, and will also help us find you if there are regular accidental errors on your collected signatures. Also attach your return address to the envelope in the appropriate place, for the same reasons.
Signatures can be turned in via USPS, or in-person by appointment. Keep in mind that for every 3 pages, USPS will require an additional stamp. Signatures should be mailed to: Ken Moellman, PO Box 2, Alexandria, KY 41001
Checklist for mailing signatures:
- Each page you’re sending to us has your initials at the bottom-right of the page.
- Use one stamp for every 3 pages being returned via USPS in a regular letter envelope.
- Include something in the envelope to let us know who the signature tally should be applied to, if you’re participating in the straw poll.
- We are hoping to complete this drive prior to Memorial Day weekend. Please be sure to check in regularly, or contact us, to find out when the petition drive will end.
Compensation for Petitioning
We do have limited funding for paid petitioning. This is reserved for those who will collect 500 or more signatures and wish to be compensated for their work, rather than perform it on a volunteer basis. A contract must exist prior to collecting paid signatures. If interested in being compensated for collecting signatures, please contact us.
Obtaining the Petition
To get a copy of the petition, you must fill out the following form so that we know you’re out there collecting signatures, and we know how to contact you as the drive is being completed. We don’t want to leave signatures behind. Every valid signature helps!
You will need to print the petition as a double-sided long-edge flip (aka head-to-head printing) document on regular US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) paper. Maximize the size (without cutting off any information) to print this with the boxes as large as possible. It will help signers have enough room to sign the petition.
