Petitioning for 2008 Candidates for Office

Introduction

Please take a moment to read through this page, so you can be sure that your greatly appreciated effort is not in vein. Petitioning is a legal process and therefore we must follow the law. Failing to do so will lead to the exclusion of signatures from the total sum of collected signatures. This page will attempt to quickly address all potential issues.

Political Status

The Kentucky Secretary of State, in accordance with Kentucky Law, currently considers the Libertarian Party of Kentucky a "political group". Because of this standing, our candidates do not have automatic ballot access. Therefore, the LPKY must collect signatures, in accordance to the guidelines set forth by the Secretary of State and method set forth by the Attorney General's office, to put any candidate on the ballot.

Signature Requirements

The candidates running for office that will appear on statewide ballots must collect 5000 "clean" signatures; or, 5000 signatures after signatures are potentially eliminated. As such, our goal is to collect 6500 signatures, to provide a comfortable cushion in case of a challenge.

Petitions available online

The petition is available online, at the bottom of this page. The included form should be printed on Legal-sized paper (8.5" x 14"). The "Standard Practice" is to print the form duplexed; In other words, put Form 64 on the front and put form 64-2 on the back of each sheet of paper. Place the Form 59 (Printed on a separate paper) along with your petitions.

Collecting Signatures

Petitions must be filled out according to Kentucky Law and in accordance with the guidelines outlined by the Secretary of State. Those who sign must use the address at which they are registered to vote. Only residents of the State of Kentucky, who are registered to vote, may sign the petition(s). The original signatures must be turned in on the 64-2 form. The appropriate form must be used. You may print or copy as many blank 64-2 forms as necessary.
